Lanang Peaberry

The Rare Crown of Fine Natural Robusta

Discover the bold essence of Indonesia’s premier Robusta capital with an elite, hand-sorted micro-lot selection. Cultivated in the fertile highlands of southern Sumatra, West Lampung Lanang Peaberry completely redefines the boundaries of premium Robusta. Known locally as Kopi Lanang (the “Male Coffee”), this rare selection represents an extraordinary natural phenomenon where a single coffee cherry produces just one round, ultra-dense seed instead of two. By focusing its entire biological development into one single core, this peaberry captures an unforgettably intense, syrupy flavor profile.

🌱 The Highland Terroir & The Lanang Anomaly

Our single-origin coffee comes from smallholder family estates nestled within the misty volcanic ridges of West Lampung. While standard coffee cherries split their internal energy to cultivate two flat-faced seeds, a natural twist during spring pollination prompts the fruit to form a single round seed. This rare occurrence accounts for only 5% to 10% of the entire global harvest.
Grown at rare high-altitude robusta zones reaching up to 1,000 MASL, the crop benefits from mineral-dense volcanic soil and cool mountain air. This environment slows down fruit maturation, allowing the peaberry to pull higher levels of organic sugars and nutrients into its dense round shape, smoothing out any harsh bitterness.

☀️ The Traditional Natural Process (Dry Method)

To enrich the deep structural sweetness of this peaberry selection, the crop undergoes a patient, unhurried Natural Process. This method lets the bean absorb its flavor directly from the sweet fruit wrapper:
[The Natural Process Sequence]
Meticulous Red-Cherry Sort ➔ Whole Fruit Sun-Drying (2-3 Weeks on Raised Beds) ➔ Slow Fruit Mucilage Fermentation ➔ Full Dehydration to 12% ➔ Precision Dry Hulling ➔ Mechanical Density Separation for Peaberry Selection
  1. Flawless Harvesting: Farmers handpick only uniform, dark red cherries at their peak sugar concentration.
  2. Whole Fruit Dehydration: Instead of peeling the skin, the cherries are laid whole on sun-drenched drying patios.
  3. Slow Infusion: Over 14 to 21 days, the sweet fruit pulp and skin dehydrate completely around the seed. As it dries, the bean concentrates the complex sugars, creating a naturally sweet foundation.
  4. Peaberry Sifting: Once fully dried to a stable 12% moisture level, the hardened pods are hulled. Expert sorters route the green coffee through specialized density screens to isolate the round Lanang shapes from standard flat beans.

✨ Why the Taste is Exceptionally Special

Because the Peaberry absorbs its nutrients alone inside the cherry, and because the Natural process dries it inside a casing of sweet fruit meat, it develops a highly concentrated flavor profile.
  • The Cupping Notes: It features an exceptionally heavy, buttery, and full-bodied texture with almost zero acidity. The front palate is dominated by notes of decadent dark cocoa, roasted peanuts, and a rich, creamy caramel sweetness.
  • A Clean, Intense Finish: Unlike lower-grade commercial alternatives, the highland natural processing cleanses the aftertaste, leaving behind a smooth, wood-smoked malt finish. It offers a clean energy boost with double the natural caffeine of common Arabicas.

☕ Master Brewing Suggestion: Traditional ‘Tubruk’ or Moka Pot

To extract the thick texture and deep chocolate sweetness of a natural peaberry, use immersion or pressurized brewing methods.

Option A: Kopi Tubruk (Traditional Indonesian Infusion) — For Bold Authenticity

This traditional method allows the natural oils and chocolate notes to coat the mouth beautifully without being trapped by paper filters.
    • Grind Size: Fine to Medium-Fine
    • Water Temperature: 94°C – 96°C (Hot, off-boil water)
    • Ratio: 1:12 (e.g., 15 grams of coffee to 180 ml of water)
    • Method: Put the coffee grounds directly into your glass. Pour the hot water over them, stir thoroughly, and let it steep for 4 minutes. Let the grounds settle completely to the bottom before taking your first sweet, chocolatey sip.

Option B: The Stovetop Moka Pot — For an Intense Espresso-Like Profile

    • Grind Size: Fine
    • Method: Fill the coffee basket evenly without overly pressing the grounds. Brew over low, steady heat. This extraction pulls out a dense, syrupy hazelnut crema, making it the perfect base for an unforgettably rich Kopi Susu (iced milk coffee blend).
